Mr. Rutherford had many projects planned for his property after he retired and this single mother/student found his "help wanted" card on the Student Union bulletin board. He kept me working almost full-time the first year and I never knew quite what was in store when I pulled into that driveway. One day I arrived to find a pile of gravel nearly as tall as I was piled in front of the barn and Mr. Rutherford in overalls, holding plans for a "varmint guard" to completely encircle the building. He explained how he would like it three feet wide, six inches deep, lined with landscape fabric, chicken wire, and edged with steel plates so no weeds would grow or rodents burrow their way in. I said "ok" and wondered silently if he thought my middle name was "backhoe". Or the time I arrived to find the painting supplies out and him gazing at the third story gable, saying "you're not afraid of heights, are you?" "Noooo?" I replied, and by the end of that task, was walking the peak and cleaning gutters like I was born to it. I learned to prune grapes and apple trees, poke the birch borers before they killed the tree, separate irises when they clumped too thick, and dig blackhaw wherever they were found. I learned much in the ten years I was privileged to work at High Meadows and still, when I hear thunder in the distance, can hear Clyde calling from the house: "Stan! You get that girl in here!"

I met Stan in the Fall of 2012 when he was in a wheelchair and needed help bathing etc. I am so glad I took the job and got the chance to know him. It is so sad that he will not get to enjoy their new home, with it's view over the valley.
I will treasure forever those cheery hellos and enormous smiles. He will be missed.

Though we did not get to see Uncle Stan very often, he and Clyde always kept in touch with this part of the Steen clan. We looked forward to teir christmas cards, his letters and his occasional comments regarding my "Pastor's Paragraphs" in the church newsletter that we sent to him each month. He will be missed!
Our sincerest condolences go out to Linda, and we thank you for taking care of Uncle Stan in his latter years. God bless you!

I met Dr. Rutherford about 6 years ago when he hired me to do some secretarial work for him. The work was finished in a few months time and our relationship quickly grew from employer to friend. Dr Rutherford became "Stan" very quickly. He loved to come over for supper and visit with my husband and me. He would speak lovingly of his past childhood, time spent with Clyde, his dogs. He had a great love for his uncle (who raised him),and for his mother. He also loved the view from his home and property and drove out to the highest field to admire the view of the Genesee Valley. There was only one complaint, ever, and that was of his worsening mobility which was a great frustration. I am blessed to have known Stan and shall miss him.

Linda--Many thanks for watching over Stanley these past few years--I worked for Clyde in the college union building and learned a great deal from her. I had Dr. Rutherford as a Speech teacher and he gave you the impression that he was tough but he passed me. We did not encounter each other very much but his relationship with the Geneseo United Methodist Church and my wife's membership gave us a bond that neither forgot. He was also active watching over the continued development of Geneseo and it was appreciated. I pray he is united with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Stan loved dogs and especially whippets. He had Slimmy and a little Italian Greyhound, Farrah. We had many visits with our whippets and his. We used to let them run in the fields behind his house. We hope he is reunited with his beloved dogs.

Dr. Rutherford was the gracious and vibrant person who first welcomed me to Geneseo on my interview for a college teaching position in the Department of Communication. His love of the Finger Lakes region and dedication to the college inspired me make Geneseo my home and pursue a career in college teaching. His spirit and sense of humor are qualities that endured across the decades of his life and will be fondly remembered and admired.

Such a nice man - Stan was always very good to me when I worked at Geneseo, and he introduced me to the Dean of the School of Education at UW Madison when I entered graduate school in 1973. Hop and I will miss him. Our thoughts are with Linda and family. - Kathy Trainor and Hop Manapol
