As an overseas member of the Powys Society, the notice of Dante Thomas came as a shock. I often refer to his bibliography of the great English writer whom he admired so much, and I am also working on the letters exchanged between Powys and Miller. Dante's name is ever present. I wish to offer his family my deepest condolances.

At a time I was not sure what to do with my college degree, Prof. Thomas offered me both suggestions and independent study classes I could use to investigate my options. His guidance helped me to make a solid decision that has paid off tenfold through my caree. For that I am grateful. My condolences to the family - but my congratualtions to a life well lived.
Regards,
Bob Shepard

I joined the English Department as an instructor when Dante did.
Later, I also became a dance and theater critic and met perhaps more remarkable people worldwide in that capacity than I did as a professor. But I never met a more interesting, kinder, better informed, or more generous person than Dante. His interests were legion, and he explored them with depth and passion. I cannot imagine anyone who really knew Dante and did not regard him with admiration and affection.

I came to Geneseo the year that Dante did, entering the English Department, like him, as an instructor. Later, I also was a dance and theatre critic, and as such, perhaps more than as a professor, met many remarkable, fascinating people. But I have not yet met a kinder, more informed, more generous, or more admirable person. I have quoted Dante often because he was witty and involved in countless disciplines. And I cannot imagine anyone who knew him and did not regard him highly.

I'm so sorry to hear about Dante's passing. I though Paul Schact's note to the English Department captured the man I remember from my years at Geneseo some twenty-five years ago very well. Dante was a wonderful colleague and always a pleasure to see or talk with in the mail room or near the coffee pot--where we used to cluster when we were in Blake back in the day. One thing (two actually) that I remember from those days: Dante was an avid bowler and an accomplished handler of old cars and especially vintage Volvos. He could talk really well about about both these things. Finally, I will always remember how kind he was to all of us kids, back then. My condolences to Connie and his family.
John Michael
