I knew Oliver briefly when we he was a Boston U. For a while. I never met a kinder man than him. Although our friendship was short, I will never forget him as a fellow sophomore at Boston. Patricia Sherman Dumas. NJ

I worked with Oliver at WTTG-TV in Washington, D.C. I thought about him this morning and Googled his name to see what he was doing. I am so sorry to hear that he has left us. Oliver was a producer and I was a writer for the TV station. He was always very kind and encouraging to me. Oliver was a great wordsmith and his calm demeanor was reassuring to all of us in the rough and tumble world of D.C. news. He was a gentle soul, loved Geneseo and had a great sense of humor. Rest in peace, my friend.

Having just seen you at Betty’s calling hours, where you told me a bit about Oliver’s health situation, and also his wonderful marriage proposal to you, created a vivid portrait of a very special man.

Oliver was not only a terrific collaborator when we worked together at WTTG, he was a tremendous human being.
For a man of such rare quality, he was extremely modest. Those of who worked daily with him knew better. When he was promoted to producer of the newscast, the station's news director put out a memo to staff singling out Oliver's accomplishments, including his naval service.
"Oliver," the memo noted, "is obviously more accomplished than our nation's vice president."

Reading the obit in the Washington Post today took me down memory lane. Ollie and Alex visited my parents several times while we were living in Japan and they were in the Navy. Our connection was through Tabor Academy which my brother was attending at the time. The visits were delightful with the two of them entertaining us with funny tales of their growing up years. My mother was especially fond of them and stayed in touch with them for a while. Ollie visited her once when she lived on Prince St in Alexandria, VA. He was a charming person and our lives were enriched by knowing him. My condolences to all the family.
Sincerely, Celie Rehberg McGurk

For nearly 74 years this place was made far better because Ollie treated everyone with a garden variety of courtesy and respect that should be given to everyone. We, his friends and colleagues, were privileged to know him, and to enjoy his quiet sense of humor. I am filled with a treasury of memories of growing up in Geneseo, and Conesus Lake, and Ollie was certainly prominent in many of these fond memories. To Shannon, and all of his brothers and sisters, I share your profound loss, he will be missed. Indeed, these past few years he went through the hedge backwards, but did so with the same grace he enjoyed in health. My prayers are with him, and all of his family.

To Oliver's Family and Friends:
It is a very sad day in the Valley. I consider myself extremely lucky to have known such a renaissance individual. What a fighter he was to maintain a normal life with the hand that was dealt him. I don't know if I could do what he has done in his later years with such grace and class. Heaven just picked up a #1 draft choice for their team!
