Obituary of Georgia Holpp Kroehnke

Georgia Holpp Kroehnke died January 10, 2015. The daughter of H. Carl Holpp and Neva Nixon Holpp (formerly of Geneseo) she was born March 29, 1922 in Greenwich, Connecticut. She was their only child. Remarkable from the very beginning, she was first live C-section at the Greenwich, Connecticut Hospital in 1922. As a girl Georgia lived in Larchmont, New York. She graduated from Mamaroneck High School in 1940. Her father was a very successful New York City florist and after working for the Rosary Flower Company on Park Ave., in 1942 he opened his own store; H. Carl Holpp Company on Lexington Ave. and ran it for the next 30 years. Georgia traveled for the first time at age seven. She accompanied her grandmother and her parents as they traveled to Europe with the "Gold Star" mothers of World War I. She was the only child on board the ship. Georgia continued to travel extensively throughout her lifetime. She graduated from Syracuse University in 1944 and went on to work as a dietician at NY Presbyterian hospital. She married Paul Walter Kroehnke Sr. on January 13, 1946 in Larchmont, New York. Paul was a graduate of Princeton University, where he studied mathematics and physics and worked at Sperry Corporation developing the first computer. They lived in St. Louis for a few years before relocating to Syosset, New York. Here they opened a store named Syosset Camera in 1955. Through the photographic industry, she continued to travel to many interesting places such as the Iron Curtain countries and the Orient. Though Georgia separated from her husband in 1972, she continued to manage the business for a total of 36 years until she sold the store in 1991. In 1972 Georgia and daughter Louise opened Edgartown Camera a branch of her store after a brief visit to the island. For the next 30 years Georgia specialized in real estate on the Vineyard. She moved full time to Edgartown in 1992. She went on to build her dream home in West Tisbury where she lived for several years. She was proud to be a founding member of the Rotary Club on Martha's Vineyard. In 2008 Georgia transitioned to living with her daughter Sally in Savannah Georgia. She enjoyed her retirement living in the south with her dog companions Claus and Rhett. She will be remembered for her love of adventure, her creative business mind, and her favorite motto: No Guts No Glory! She is survived by her four children: Louise Wadsworth and her husband William Wadsworth, Paul Walter Kroehnke Jr and his wife Angela Vitale, Sally Georgia Kroehnke, Carol Lattmann and her husband Bruce Lattmann. She has three grandchildren: Lauren Page (Crista) Wadsworth, Piper Austin Wadsworth, and Alexander Carl Lattmann. No Prior Calling Hours. Memorial Services will be Private.
