Obituary of Norman R. Gates
Norman R. Gates, age 77, of York, died Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at Morgan Estates in Geneseo. He was predeceased by his parents, Ernest and Evelyn Gates.
He is survived by his siblings, Carol (John) Taylor of Fowlerville, Tom (Sharon) Gates of York, Laura Jeanne (Ray) Paulsen of Waterloo, Joyce (Robert) Hoppough of Honeoye, Linda (Thomas) Kinney of FL, many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Norman was born June 2, 1946 in Warsaw, NY the son of Ernest L. and Evelyn Barnes Gates. He was a graduate of York Central School class of 1965. Norman was co-owner and operator of Ernest L. Gates & Sons Farm in York with his brother Tom. He served as a member of the Livingston County Farm Bureau and past treasurer of Upstate Young Dairymen's Association. Norm was currently serving as a Council Member for the Town of York which he has been doing for over 20 years. He was a member of the York Fire Department for over 50 years where he was currently serving as President. He was Past President of the York Ambulance and a certified EMT. Norm was also the Treasurer of the Livingston County Volunteer Fireman's Association which he has held for over 20 years. He was the Secretary for over 20 years for the York-Leicester Field Days Association. Norm was the recipient of the Senior Citizen of the Year Award for the Town of York in 2012. Norm was a life member of the Town of York's Historical Society, long-time member of the Covington United Presbyterian Church, and a member of the Livingston County Republican Committee. He was also serving as President of the Pleasant Valley Cemetery Association.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, December 1, 2023 from 4-7 PM at the Rector-Hicks Funeral Home, 111 Main St. in Geneseo. His Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, December 2, 2023 at 1 PM at the Covington United Presbyterian Church with Christine James officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery in York.
