Kurt's class was my very first class at Geneso in the Fall of 1990. It must've been his first class, too. The class was electrifying and he really inspired me to want to learn more, dig deeper, ask questions, etc. He was an excellent role model and teacher. I learned so much from him. He really encouraged me in writing and research, so I owe him a debt of gratitude for making a very homesick freshman feel like she belonged at college. I am sorry I didn't get to say this to him myself in person, but I wanted the family to know how much his class and his mentorship meant. Thinking of all of you as you cope with his loss.

I am a classmate of Kurt's from Gonzaga. As Kurt was a Gonzaga grad, it does not surprise me that he lived a meaningful and influential life to others.
My sympathies to the family and friends.

I'm so sorry to read this. Kurt was probably the most influential professor I had at Geneseo (early 1990s). His classes were very interesting, but he taught me so much more. He recognized that I had a learning disability while others thought I was lazy. He taught me to communicate with professors and others to ask for help rather than stressing and failing. I wish I had conveyed my appreciation to him. My condolences to all.

Kurt was one of the first people to welcome me at PYC. He encouraged me to say yes to my Dad's boat, an Ericson 29 like Seaking, when I was not yet confident in my abilities. He and Jim helped me so much that first year. Kurt helped me bring the boat back to PYC from Sodus, and taught me how to enter the harbor with leading lights, a first for me. He and Jim helped me take down and put up the mast, another first. I owe a great deal of my confidence in my ability as a skipper to his support. I will always be grateful to him. He is a loving and kind soul. I hope his next journey will be profound and amazing.

I’d like to share two memories of gratitude for Kurt.
First- he gave my son his first piece of gum. We were on a ski trip with couples and kids to “Kurt’s Yurts” and our son was three. Kurt was in “kid duty” and was sharing gum. Matt was so excited as a three year old. Until he alarmedly shared with Kurt that he swallowed his gum. Kurt reassured Matt that it was fine by asking him “how do YOU feel?” Matt realized he was fine.
A simple example of Kurt bringing people new experiences and reassurance when needed.
The second memory of gratitude came when Matt was in third grade and just starting Odyssey of the Mind. Kurt was their coach and had great patience teaching the team how to build with balsa wood and crusher board. Kurt spent many many hours teaching them skills in his barn and all of those kids continued on for years and years in OM. I believe we owe his first coach a lot of credit for lighting the spark of creativity, passion for building, and dedication to learning.
We will miss you Kurt. You made us all better in your own unique and wonderful way!
