Kelly, Eve, Julia and Jennifer .... just reading about your Dad's loss today brought back many cherished and fond memories of time spent with your family when I was a young girl. He will forever remain a stand-out member of the "old guard" of SUNY Geneseo. I loved reading about his life history and accomplishments as well as Dr. Willey's heartfelt condolence message. Clearly, he was an inspiration to students, faculty and his family. Hugs to you all as you traverse this difficult moment in time. Cindy (Sells) Pond

In addition to my years working at the College and appreciating all that John gave to his students and music colleagues, Hop and I were grateful to know him as a wonderful neighbor. This is a wonderful tribute to a life well-lived. Please accept our condolences.

John was my teaching colleague at Geneseo from 1966 until his retirement from the college. He was a great friend, true colleague, and perhaps the finest teacher I have ever met. His interests transcended any preoccupation with music alone. He followed developments in science, politics, literature, film and much more, incorporating where appropriate what he knew into his passion for music, particularly "classical" music from all periods and styles. But not only "classical" music (Example: A team taught course with Gene Stelzig on the poetry and music of Bob Dylan)! If a thing was interesting, he was interested.
John was a brilliant administrator who preferred teaching. Because of that preference, he made it perfectly clear that teaching was his game, but, if administering was the needed job of the moment, he would do it to perfection -- for three years and no more. During those three years he doubled, possibly tripled the number of majors, launched a program of recruitment and publicity that raised the profile of both department and college and left the Department of Music in all ways better before returning to teaching -- his greatest love. During those three years he became a one man recruitment and development guide as he forcefully moved the program of music onward and upward. A wise friend, a model of professional engagement, font of information on the essentials of the discipline and life generally; he was irreplaceable. I am deeply grateful to have known him and will miss him greatly.
