To Mike's family....
I am so sad to learn of Woodsy's passsing. I have known Mike since college & then onto our faculty days @YCS.
He was a true & caring friend to all those he knew.
He contributed so much to so many different areas of life.
He touched scores of children in so many ways besides that of an educator. But he has left a lasting legacy in athletics, too. He was a super hero coach!
I shall also remember him for the true muscian he was also. His voice & enthusiasm on the stag will be remembered by all his long time fans. He had such a stage presence.
My fondest forever memory of Mike will be his entetaining @ my retirement party when he broke into"When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" for me! It still gives me goose bumps to think of it. What a guy!
REST in PEACE, Mike. Bless U & your family...

My sincere condolences to the Woods family. Mike and I became friends as English majors at SUNY Geneseo. We bonded in our 8 AM Saturday French class, taught by Dr. Smith. The Rascals were sponsored by the Phi Sigs for a Friday midnight pajama party, not to be missed by either of us. As luck would have it, Dr. Smith was the Phi Sig advisor and gave Mike and me a gift by posing a pop quiz question of, “What were The Rascals wearing at last night’s concert?” Two very pleased and tired rockers! I am thankful for my many correspondences with Mike, especially over the last few years. He made friends and nurtured those friendships. His mission in life was to lift people up, and he did so through his teaching and coaching; with humility and humor. He was sincere with his compliments and concern. He Really cared. I so appreciated Mike’s surprising me at my mother’s celebration of life, and for his reaching out to cheer my 104 year old aunt when she was failing. Always thinking of others. I appreciated his encouragement in my crusade against animal abuse. I shall miss you, Mike. I wish I could have been there for you during the last few months. I am sorry that you did not get to “do” Florida with us. I am heartbroken for your family, who were so precious to you. How you loved them! Your legacy will endure through your children and grandchildren. I can see you now, Mike, dressed in your vest and beret, walking your happy steps into the College Union…always smiling, always rocking a tune. I hope we will meet again, you on stage, me on the dance floor. Until then, GO BILLS! Cheers and peace, my friend. There are so many better human beings because you touched their lives.

I worked with Mike while a Guidance Counselor at York Central School. I remember Mike storming into my office, red faced and impassioned, with a student in tow who wasn't meeting his expectations. He wanted me as a witness to his conviction that the adolescent could do better. His genius tough love strategy worked like a charm, shocking the student to live up to his/her potentia
.
On the flip side, he was the grooviest lead singer in the Finger Lakes Area!
What a life and more importantly, what a man!
Rest in peace Woodsy.

I graduated in 1971. Mike was part of all our collective memories back then because his band played at so many school functions. We all left after graduation and sought our careers elsewhere but Mike stayed in Geneseo and did wonderful things as a track coach. To those of us who loved to return to Geneseo, it was always fun to find Woodsy and have a beer with him when we were in town. It is remarkable how his passing has affected so many people. He was a great coach but he was also a great guy. We will miss you, Woodsy.

Woodsie was an alumnus of Geneseo whom I loved like a brother. His passing is very hard to understand. It comes under the heading of why bad things happen to good people.
My heart goes out to his family.

Since hearing the news of your passing I've been lost in emotion thinking of the special times at York Central School and GVRC. You shaped who I became as a person through the classroom, track and camp. Wind sprints up Art's Hill, Track Invitationals, Essays and Here is Love. For me personally, one special memory was the 1984 track season. We trained hard and the season began with the HFL Invitational at night under the lights. It was the start of a big year for us (boys and girls) and I think the entire team was excited to compete. York Central had a great evening cheering for team mates, personal bests and lots of trophies. I recall feeling like we had just won the Olympics ;) Perhaps the biggest accomplishment is we believed in ourselves and went on to have tremendous seasons over 1984 and 1985. You had a special way of celebrating our individual achievements but it was always about being a team and a great team mate. The time spent at GVRC was just as special living the mantra - Here is Love. I am glad I got the chance to thank you when I saw you last a couple of years ago. Your part in my life was a blessing. My deepest sympathy to your family during this difficult time.

Our most sincere condolences to Mike’s entire family. He was truly a one-of-a-kind gentleman, a renaissance man who was kind to everyone and loved life to its fullest. I feel truly blessed to have known Mike and was able to spend lots of quality time with him on the golf course and enjoying his enormous musical talents. Rest easy, my friend..you have certainly earned it.
